Kent County or Central Delaware is home to the state capital complex in Dover. The open area around the Capital called Legislative Mall, is the sight of the annual Dover Days celebration in May, the Independence Day celebration in July and outdoor concerts in the summer. Dover is home to a large variety of historic buildings surrounding the capitol and several museums, each providing a glimpse into Delaware’s historic past as well as a thriv- ing downtown. Dover is also home to Bally’s Dover Hotel and Casino Resort. The resort includes the Dover Motor Speedway featuring a mile long concrete banked race track, nicknamed the “Monster Mile” that hosts a NASCAR tripleheader race weekend in April, harness racing, a casino and the Bally’s Dover Hotel and Conference Center. In addition to the Bally’s Dover Casino Resort hotel, there are a large variety of quality accommodations along the Rt. 13 corridor in Dover. The accommodations include the Hilton Garden Inn, Residence Inn, Fairfield Inn, Sleep Inn, Main Stay Suites, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Comfort Suites, to help you enjoy your stay. Central Delaware is home to a large Amish population, located west of Dover. There are several businesses where you can buy Amish made goods including Spence’s Bazaar in downtown Dover, Byler’s Store on Route 8 west of Dover, Shady Lane Selections Quilt Shop and Rose Valley Furniture located off of Route 8 and Fifer Orchards located southwest of Dover in Camden-Wyoming. The city of Harrington, located south of Dover off of Route 13, is home to the Delaware State Fair, held each July at the state fairgrounds. On the fairgrounds property is Central Delaware’s Harrington Raceway and Casino. The fairgrounds and casino are home to an indoor ice rink and many other events throughout the year including concerts, craft shows and horse shows. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites and Quality Inn & Suites are conveniently located across from the fairgrounds to accommodate visitors. The city of Milford, located southeast of Dover off of Route 113, hosts the annual Bug & Bud festival in April, a downtown farmers market each Saturday during the summer months, and the annual Riverwalk Freedom Festival in September. The Milford Hampton Inn is conveniently located off of Route 1 providing visitors easy access to Milford, Dover, the DE Turf sports complex and the Delaware beaches. Central Delaware offers ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors including Killen’s Pond State Park and The Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Bombay Hook located near Smyrna, offers visitors the chance to see a variety of shorebirds and waterfowl. The Quality Inn Smyrna Inn is a great location to begin your trip to Bombay Hook. The museum allows visitors full access to many of the museum’s most impressive aircraft: walk from cockpit to cockpit as tour guides, often retired crew members of these airplanes, describe the history of the planes and their missions and bring the aircraft to life. Group tours and meeting facilities available. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is a 16,000-acre ha- ven along the Delaware Bay coast east of Smyrna, with salt marshes, ponds, fields, and forests. Visitors come from all over the world to see the variety of migratory shorebirds and water- fowl that stop to feed at the refuge, an important feeding stop on the Atlantic Flyway. Established in 1937, the refuge offers walking and auto tours, birdwatching, nature programs, and a visitor center with a gift shop. Twelve miles of auto tour roads within the refuge, with hiking trails, observation towers, and spotting scopes along the route, lets visitors get close to the birds and other wildlife. The rink is located on the grounds of the Delaware State Fair in Harrington, the Centre is open September through June for ice skating. DE Turf is the largest all-synthetic turf sports complex in the Mid-Atlantic region located off of Rt. 1 at 4000 Bay Road in Frederica and features 12 synthetic turf fields, 5 lighted fields and seating for 700 patrons.
